Call for Artists: Gopuff Window Design Competition in Van Ness Neighborhood

Gopuff & Van Ness Main Street Promote Local Artists With Window Design Contest

Washington, D.C. (May 3, 2023) – Gopuff, the go-to solution for immediate everyday needs, and Van Ness Main Street (VNMS) today announced a partnership to uplift local artists and beautify the Van Ness Business Corridor. The two organizations are calling for local, inspiring artists to submit proposed artwork interpreting VNMS’s 2023 theme ‘celebrating community’. Following public voting, three winners’ works will be displayed in the windows of Gopuff’s site on VNMS.

Van Ness Main Street Board VP Carolyn Godavitarne shared the organization’s excitement, “We are thrilled to partner with Gopuff and our local art community to continue enhancing our neighborhood through art and culture. Bringing together local artists to share their talent with the Van Ness Main Street community and everyone who travels the Connecticut Avenue corridor is at the heart of our mission.”

Ward 3 Councilmember Matt Frumin applauded the effort, saying “I am excited Van Ness Main Street
and Gopuff are thinking creatively about how to not only activate our retail spaces with art, but to
engage our amazing local artists to help make this vision a reality.”

Submission & Selection Process:
  • Submissions (May 2, 2023 - June 30, 2023): Artwork submissions will be accepted over the course of 8 (eight) weeks, from May 2, 2023 - June 30, 2023. Artwork proposals must be submitted as a JPG, PNG, or PDF file or via SurveyMonkey here. When submitting, artists should keep in mind that the final artwork should fit in Gopuff’s 40” x 72” windows.
  • Finalists Announcement (July 10, 2023.): Gopuff and Van Ness Main Street will notify finalists via email. Van Ness Main Street will also share the finalists’ artwork on social media on July 10, 2023 for voting.
  • Voting (July 10, 2023 - July 21, 2023): Voting by the public will take place between July 10, 2023 - July 21, 2023 on social media.
  • Winner Announcement (July 25, 2023): Winners will be announced July 25, 2023.
  • Unveiling (September 29, 2023): The artists will have 8 (eight) weeks after the winner's announcement to complete their artwork before the official unveiling during Art All Night 2023 on September 29, 2023.

Gopuff will provide one 40”x 72” canvas and supplies for each of the three winning artists to bring their work to life. Their works will be prominently displayed in Gopuff’s window panels (located at 4221 Connecticut Ave NW) and promoted on Gopuff’s social media. In addition, the winners will be awarded a free one-year subscription to Gopuff’s popular Fam Membership including 10,000 Puff Points that can be used to purchase items available on the platform.

VNMS Celebrates our Van Ness, Wakefield, and Forest Hills Communities, Saturday, April 29th from 7-11 PM!

Dear Friends of VNMS,

We are thrilled to invite you to our first in-person Community Celebration on April 29th from 7-11 pm at the UDC Theater of the Arts on Windom Place. This will be our first live fundraising event to benefit the many programs that carry out our mission. The past couple of years have been tough, yet we have much to celebrate: eight new businesses with three more on the way; the most beautiful pollinator plantings on all of Connecticut Avenue; the launch of the very popular Movie Night in the Park @ the UDC Amphitheater; two successful Art All Night events; the return of our Holiday Pop Up; the Levine Music Concert Series; and the incredible volunteers that donated 1,475 hours of their time (more than double 2021!) valued at more than $44,000 by the Independent Sector!

This celebration is very meaningful to us as we will be giving out our newly renamed Reginald M. Felton Spirit of VNMS Award in honor of our beloved board member Reggie Felton who passed away last year. We still feel his loss greatly and wish to honor his memory of servant leadership with this annual award. This year, we are proud to honor outgoing UDC President Ronald Mason, Jr., J.D. for his commitment to our main street program and our community! It is also very meaningful that our businesses will be providing all of the food and beverages for your enjoyment. So please thank these businesses for their sponsorship: Calvert Woodley, Sfoglina, Bread Furst, Freedom Church DC, Rosemary Bistro, I’m Eddie Cano, Comet Pizza, Buck’s Fishing and Camping, Muchas Gracías, and Call Your Mother! And to get you even more excited here is our entertainment line-up so bring your dancing shoes!

  • Edmund Burke School Band
  • UDC’s Dr. Allyn Johnson Jazz Trio
  • Carly Harvey's Blues Quartet
  • DC Crush Funk Brass Band

We will be especially celebrating you – our most important reason to celebrate! Our community has supported VNMS through these terrible years, helping us raise more than $160,000 since early 2020 for our critical programs. We hope you will support us again and join us at our Community Celebration on April 29th! Tell your friends and family. We look forward to seeing you!

Your tickets await, click here to purchase!

Thank you!

VAN NESS IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS!! AN INVITATION FOR COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE CONVERSATION AND COLLABORATION

Van Ness Main Street (VNMS) extends from Van Ness Street, NW north to Nebraska Avenue, NW on both sides of the busy Connecticut Avenue, NW corridor.  The VNMS Open for Business Project welcomes renovation and development in support of enriched commercial density and business diversity. We invite you to meet with us to discuss this exciting initiative.

Why Van Ness Main Street?

1. Van Ness, Forest Hills and Chevy Chase, DC are thriving residential neighborhoods with a wide range of housing options for people of all ages and incomes.  Van Ness Main Street neighbors appreciate retail development that supports daily life activities as well as community, cultural and recreational engagement.

2. Van Ness is the “node of Northwest”—the middle cluster of the five retail real estate clusters that punctuate Connecticut Avenue west of Rock Creek Park.  Van Ness offers large buildings, both residential and commercial, abundant tenant square footage, and zoning flexibility to encourage optimum building development.

3. Residents of Van Ness Main Street neighborhoods appreciate its special combination of suburban, urban and parkland amenities.

4. Van Ness Main Street is unique in its confluence of cultural and educational institutions: The University of the District of Columbia and Law School; American University’s WAMU radio broadcasting hub; Howard University Law School; The Levine School of Music; The Whittle School; Edmund Burke School; The Sheridan School and embassies from 22 countries. Destination retailers and restaurants include: Politics and Prose; Bread Furst Bakery; Uptown Market; Sfoglina; Muchas Gracias; Comet Ping Pong and I’m Eddie Cano.

5. Van Ness Main Street businesses are resilient. During the pandemic, five businesses closed and another five opened.  Four businesses are slated to open in 2022 and 2023.

The new VNMS banners, designed by our resident artist-designer, Wendy Bogart speak to our vibrant community surrounded by our treasured Soapstone Trail and Rock Creek Park.

Dear Friends of the Van Ness Main Street Community,

On behalf of our Van Ness Main Street (VNMS) Board, I wish you and yours a peaceful and joyful end to 2021 and a healthy 2022. We have been through unprecedented times that have presented new challenges to us all. However, these times have also brought out the best in us, our businesses, our institutions, and our residents throughout
Van Ness, Forest Hills, and Wakefield. VNMS has worked diligently and passionately led by our Executive Director, Gloria Garcia, to help our businesses thrive, create community through new events such as Movie Night in the Park, Art All Night and beloved events such as our Holiday Pop Up Market, integrate our institutional partners into this programming, improve safety in the corridor working with MPD and the Department of Behavioral Health, and strengthen our sustainability and aesthetic with our plantings up and down the avenue.

And we welcomed four new businesses during our pandemic lockdown last year, opened another this year, and have three more slated to open. VNMS is now thriving not just surviving and as we enter 2022, please consider getting involved in our programming either through our committees or volunteering!

Today, I am thrilled to unveil our VNMS branded street light banners that will be installed next month to start off 2022 with a flourish. Designed by our resident artist-designer, Wendy Bogart, carefully curated by our Design Committee, approved by the board and made possible by our generous ANC grant last year, these beautiful banners will be our brand statement markers as people walk and drive through our corridor. We hope you fall in love with the modern design in our VNMS brand colors that speaks to our vibrant community surrounded by our treasured Soapstone Trail and Rock Creek Park.

We have accomplished all of our programming thanks to you, our generous donors. In fiscal 2021, we raised more than $70,000 to fund our critical mission. As we close out 2021, I ask that you consider an end-of-year donation to VNMS. You can easily donate here and to further help us carry out our programming, please consider a monthly or annual recurring donation. Thank you for making our community one of the best in DC!

Warmly,

Barbara Lardy

The virtual meetings will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 and Thursday, April 1, 2021; the same information will be presented during both meetings.

The Connecticut Avenue NW Reversible Lane Safety and Operations Study assesses the multimodal (vehicular, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian) operational and safety impacts associated with removing or maintaining/improving the existing reversible lane system and improving multimodal accessibility (e.g., consideration of adding protected bicycle lanes). The project area is 2.7 miles long with the primary area from Connecticut Avenue at Legation Street NW to Calvert Street NW. The secondary project area is bordered by Wisconsin Avenue to the west, Broad Branch Road to the east, Dupont Circle to the south, and Western Avenue to the north.
Through the study, DDOT aims to:
  • Reduce crashes and conflict points while enhancing safety for all modes, and roadway users as well as pedestrians
  • Incorporate additional mobility options along the corridor (e.g., protected bicycle lanes)
  • Assess feasibility of removing Reversible Lane Operation
  • Determine feasibility of reducing capacity along Connecticut Avenue and the effect on adjacent roadways
  • Advance Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Vision Zero goals
During the meeting, DDOT will offer topic-specific learning rooms which will run consecutively and allow stakeholders to concentrate on a specific project topic area. The Learning Rooms will be moderated by members of the project team and will occur either prior to or after the general meeting.

Stronger Together - Big News to Share

Last year with the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development’s (DSLBD) and Councilmember Cheh’s help and support, Van Ness Main Street (VNMS) took a giant leap and expanded our borders beyond Van Ness to encompass the communities of Wakefield and Forest Hills. This expansion - from Van Ness Street now to Nebraska Avenue - has not only increased our local footprint, but it allows our main street program to make an even greater impact within the community, benefitting both the businesses and the residents.
